Dyslexia
Dyslexia is the most common learning disorder affecting both reading and writing skills. Some possible indicators of dyslexia are:
- Difficulty with rhyming
- Difficulty with isolating sounds in words (i.e. the last sound in cat is /t/)
- Difficulty decoding words (sounding them out)
- Difficulty spelling
- Slow reading
- Impaired word recall (that feeling that you can't get the word to come out of your mouth)
- Guessing at a word based on the first letter of the word (i.e. saying "baseball" when presented with the word "badminton")
- Poor reading comprehension
What to Expect
What does a Dyslexia Assessment Entail?
A Dyslexia Assessment will be completed over 2-3 sessions and will include (at a minimum):
- Intelligence Testing
- Standardized Reading and Writing Assessment
- Assessment of short and long term memory
- Assessment of phonological processing
- Assessment of orthographic processing
A final meeting will be held to review the results and recommendations.
